Canadian Hemlock (Tsuga canadansis) also know as eastern hemlock or eastern hemlock-spruce is a fast growing coniferous evergreen tree native to eastern North America.  It is also the State Tree of Pennsylvania.   The Hemlock is also the most common evergreen tree in eastern North America, beating out the Eastern White Pine and Loblolly Pine in terms of overall volume.  Hemlock are also known as one of a few trees that do well in shady areas and are commonly used in tree lines or evergreen screens that have shady conditions.  If planting a tree line or evergreen screen we recommend spacing trees and where from 5 – 15′ apart.

  • Fast, 1 – 3 Ft per year

Mature Height

  • 30 – 40 Ft in height and 20 – 30 Ft in width

Sun Preference

  • Full sun to full shade

Soil Requirements

  • Acidic, loamy, moist, sandy, well-drained and clay soils. It has some drought tolerance.
