Blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica) is the true harbinger of autumn. In September before most other trees its dark green leaves begin to change to yellow, orange, scarlet and maroon. It has a pyramidal form that becomes slight more rounded with age.

Soil Requirements
- Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils but prefers moist, acidic soils. Tolerates poorly-drained soils and can grow in standing water. On the other end of the spectrum, tolerates some drought and adapts to some dryish soils.
