Blackgum (Nyssa sylvatica) is the true harbinger of autumn.  In September before most other trees its dark green leaves begin to change to yellow, orange, scarlet and maroon.  It has a pyramidal form that becomes slight more rounded with age.

  • 30-50 ft high and 20-30 ft wide.

Sun Preference

  • Full sun to partial shade

Soil Requirements

  • Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils but prefers moist, acidic soils. Tolerates poorly-drained soils and can grow in standing water. On the other end of the spectrum, tolerates some drought and adapts to some dryish soils.
