Blackgum, Nyssa sylvatica, is beautiful deciduous shade tree native to the Eastern United States and Canada. It’s outstanding fall color changes from green to yellow, orange, scarlet and maroon. It has a pyramidal form that becomes slightly more rounded with age. Other common names include Black Tupelo, Sourgum, and pepperidge.

Soil Requirements
- Easily grown in average, medium to wet soils but prefers moist, acidic soils. Tolerates poorly-drained soils and can grow in standing water. On the other end of the spectrum, tolerates some drought and adapts to some dryish soils.
