European Beech (Fagus sylvatica) has been widely planted across Europe and North America for many years.  Pyramidal to oval in youth, becomes more rounded in age.  Lustous dark green, 2 to 4 inch, leaves hold late into fall before turning rich russet and golden brown colors.  Smooth gray, elephant hide-like bark is stunning in the winter landscape.  The cultivar ‘Tricolor’ is quite amazing with its purple leaf and rose and pinkish white border.
